Sewing a bedspread on a sofa with your own hands is not so difficult as it might seem at first glance. The most important thing is to make the right measurements and choose the right fabric for the overall interior.

How to sew a bedspread on the sofa with your own hands?

Here are some tips to help you sew your bedspread.

  1. The amount of fabric should be slightly larger than the size of the sofa, as a margin of about ten centimeters is needed on each side.
  2. Choose a non-slip fabric, or use a lining. Otherwise, the bedspread will often fall off the sofa.
  3. Determine in advance where the bedspread will be located - only on the sofa seat, on the seat and back, and maybe also on the armrests, if any.
  4. Better use your sewing machine. So less time will be spent on the process itself, and the seams will turn out to be more accurate and reliable.
  5. To give thickness to the bedspread, make a layer of insulation (for example, batting).
  6. Decorate your bedspread with ruffles or stitching.

Plain bedspread

To make a simple do-it-yourself sofa cover(for example, as in the picture below), you will need:

  • a large flap of fabric of the required size (you can use a canvas with a bright print);
  • wide ribbon;
  • tailor scissors;
  • needle-pins;
  • threads to match the fabric.

Here are instructions: how to sew a simple bedspread.

  1. Take your piece of fabric and ribbon.
  2. Gently pin the tape to the material so that it covers it on both sides. It is also necessary to wrap a small piece of the edge of the tape (a few millimeters) inside the collar so that it does not crumble during use.
  3. When you baste the ribbon correctly all around the fabric, move on to stitching.
  4. Place the fabric with the tape right side up under the sewing machine foot.
  5. Sew around the fabric.

The tape can be replaced with a second layer of fabric, preferably fleece. Then the new flap should be slightly larger than the first one. The sewing pattern changes slightly.

  1. Lay one piece of fabric on top of the other so that the top one is sort of in the center of the bottom one, that is, the latter should look out from all sides.
  2. Fold the loose edges of the bottom layer up and in.
  3. Baste then stitch the fabric.

Everything is ready.

Patchwork bedspread

Patchwork is a fairly popular modern style in decor, which involves connecting several shreds within different colors and patterns into one.

Patchwork style bedspread will become not only a useful thing in the house, but also a part of interior decoration.

In order to sew such a wonderful thing, you will need not one piece of fabric, but several different square pieces. Usually a set of five to ten pieces is used for sewing.

So, the order of work.

  1. Imagine how your bedspread should look like as a result. Above is a schematic diagram. The bedspread in this particular example appears to be made up of six patches laid out in a specific pattern that form a diamond pattern.
  2. For ease of sewing, arrange the pieces in front of you by color in a pile, which are placed in the stitching order.
  3. Start stitching pieces 1 to 6 together on the sewing machine in the prescribed order.
  4. Finish row following chart.
  5. Sew all rows separately.
  6. Now you can start stitching them together. Do not forget to check their order and compliance with the pattern.
  7. Since the bedspread is large, it will be more convenient to stitch one half of it first, and then the second. Then sew everything together.
  8. Thus, the upper part is already ready for you.
  9. Take a large piece of fabric that is slightly larger than the stitched top layer of the bedspread.
  10. You can use extra insulation.
  11. Sew together the top patchwork layer and the bottom one, as in the case of a simple bedspread.

The patchwork bedspread is ready. It will look something like the photo.

Quilted bedspread pattern

The bedspread can be decorated with a quilted pattern. Additional materials are not required for this, and the result will be simply amazing.

Before sewing quilted bedspreads on the sofa (photo above), you need to sketch a pattern (for example, a rhombus). To do this, follow these steps.

  1. On a sheet of paper, draw a sketch of the bedspread with the intended pattern to scale.
  2. Chalk the desired life-size pattern on the back of the fabric. Check if it fits well all over the bedspread. If yes, then you can proceed to the final stitch.

To do this, draw a pattern on the front side of the bedspread. Start making the pattern from the edge, not from the middle. It is better to use large squares and diamonds, rather than small ones.

After you baste the pattern around the entire bedspread, proceed with the stitching on the sewing machine. In this case, you certainly can not do without it. Stitch carefully on the front side of the bedspread along the pre-marked lines.

Finally, remove the thread that you marked the pattern.

Flounce on bedspread

Frill is another idea for decorating a bedspread on a sofa (photo below).

The order of work to complete it will be as follows.

  1. Take the fabric of the required width. You can use it as a new piece,and trimmings that remained from sewing bedspreads.
  2. Sew along the entire length of the fabric to prevent fraying.
  3. Fold the cut with a light accordion and start sewing it on.

At the same time, if you want the frill to be visible, then place it on top, after turning its edge inward. You can do either one or two lines. If you want to hide the frill, then attach it to the bedspread on the back side.

Spread on corner sofa

Sew a bedspread on a corner sofa a little more difficult than on a regular one. Here you will need to take additional measurements and trim a few details.

The order of work is as follows:

  1. Take measurements from the two pieces of the sofa.
  2. Sew the covers first on one part of it, and then on the other.
  3. When both halves are ready, sew them together on the reverse side, slightly at an angle.

The bedspread is ready. Now you can decorate it, for example, with a frill.
