The scruffy rags look like they've been brought back from a century-old attic exile. Holes, stains, abrasions, broken buttons, protruding threads, uneven seams and details of the torso … It seems that a seven-year-old girl sewed them many years ago. Meanwhile, to make these funny toys look exactly like this, craftsmen spend hours deliberately aging all the details in all sorts of ways.

Dolls of author's work are created, first of all, not for games. This is an example of interior decor. The dolls, radiating warmth and comfort, decorate houses and serve as talismans for their owners. The legend about their appearance says: a woman sewed a doll for her daughter from the remains of old things. The girl played with her in the attic of the bakery when her mother took her to work with her. There, the little mistress forgot the doll. The toy lay in the attic for many years, until it was found by the mature owner, already herselfbecoming a mother. The doll managed to become dusty, sooty and soaked with the smells of the bakery - coffee, vanilla, cinnamon. The touched woman carefully kept her mess, and sewed similar dolls for her daughters.

Natural fabric (ideally - old and shabby), cotton and woolen threads, a needle, buttons, decorations (lace, beads, beads), tea and coffee - that's all you need to create a masterpiece in attic puppet style. You can find patterns on thematic resources or use this one:

Step by step instructions

  1. Natural fabrics (cotton, linen, wool) in skin tones need to be aged. To do this, sprinkle black tea on the fabric, add a few drops of coffee and draw with a burnt match, pencils or felt-tip pens. Scratch the fabric with the blade, but don't cut it. Wash.
  2. While the material dries, cut out the details. Remember: attic dolls are all about simplicity, so don't look for patterns with complex details. You can create your own pattern, and small irregularities are even a plus.

Sew the cut out parts - legs, arms, torso, leaving small holes. Stuff with cotton and sew up gaps. Use a needle and thread to assemble all the details into a single whole.

  4. Before sewing on the head, you need to work with it a little. Pre-washed in very hot watersew woolen threads to the head. Attic dolls look very cute with uneven braids and different bows. Sew on button eyes. They can also be painted with light blue watercolors. Let the paint flow a little. Sew the head to the body.
  5. To create a dress, choose a beautifully shedding red fabric with a printed pattern. After washing with colored things in hot water, the material will be what you need. A tailored rustic sundress or dress should be embellished with slightly torn lace, scratched beads and/or uneven stitching on the finishing seams. Put it on. Often craftsmen put on attic dolls hats made of pieces of felt or worn leather.
