Girls of all ages dream of a fluffy skirt that will make you feel like a queen or a ballet dancer. Agree, in our time, such skirts have firmly become fashionable. You can go to a gala event in them, or you can just take a walk with your dog.

If your child plays sports or dances, that's great. Such activities have a great effect on he alth. But there are times when a wonderful outfit is needed for a reporting concert and the question arises: how to sew a tutu? The studio is too expensive and not always convenient. But after all, every mother, having basic sewing skills on a typewriter, is able to build it. A do-it-yourself ballet tutu is very easy to sew, you do not need to build a pattern for it and there are no difficult technologies.

The story of the first ballerina costume

The first tutu skirt appeared before the audience in 1939. It was an airy skirt for ballerinas from several layers of translucent fabric. To create one copy of such a skirt, it took up to 11 m of light flowing material, folded into folds using a certain technology. The appearance of these skirts is different and depends on the ballet. The classic, or traditional, tutu is a flat, rigid skirt in the form of a circle; Chopin's tutu is longer and softer; "chiton skirt" - made of chiffon in one layer.

Choice of fabrics and tools

To sew a ballet tutu, you will need:

  • Tulle of medium hardness of the desired color (must be no shorter than 7 m).
  • Wide elastic band (width 2.5 cm, length equal to the circumference of the waist - 3 cm).
  • Satin ribbon matching color (7-8 cm wide).
  • Lace, guipure.
  • Beads, sequins.
  • Scissors.
  • Threads and needles.
  • Elastic wire (about 150 cm) or thick fishing line, tape.

Calculating the amount of fabric

To sew one tutu for an adult woman, we need to take medium-hard tulle up to 7 m long, hard tulle - up to 2 m. For sewing a skirt intended for a girl, you need 3-4 m and 1.5 m, respectively.

You will also need a wire (or a very thick fishing line) in order for the skirt to retain its flat shape - about 150 cm, and an elastic band for the belt (3 cm wide) - 50 cm.

Girls' classic tutu skirt

At the beginning of our work, we will definitely cut off the edge of the fabric and iron it without unrolling it in 2 layers. Now fold it in half again lengthwise and pin it with pins to facilitate work. Let's trim all the layers of tulle. It is best to use a clerical knife for this purpose. We cut the edges of the fabric so that 6 strips come out 37 cm, 34 cm, 31 cm, 28 cm, 25 cm wide and22 cm.

For the belt, cut off a 90 cm long satin ribbon, sew it (not forgetting to leave room to thread the elastic) and bend it in half and in half again. We mark the places of the folds for sewing the tulle to the belt.

We should get 4 layers of medium hard tulle and 2 hard ones. In the first rows we sew tulle of medium hardness, then - hard. Sewing each next layer, we retreat from the previous one by 5 mm.

Using a safety pin, insert an elastic band into the satin belt.

We form a circle from a wire or a rigid fishing line and fix the ends with adhesive tape - we got a ring. In the middle of the skirt, under the fourth layer of softer tulle, we put this ring and sew it with threads together with both lower layers of hard tulle.

The final part of the work is ironing the soft part of the skirt. We iron carefully, straightening each crease and giving additional splendor. The skirt for the little ballerina is ready!

How to sew a tutu without sewing: the easiest option

As the famous ballet dancers say, a costume should be like a second skin. This is because this attire should be as comfortable as possible, not constrain or constrain the movements of the ballerina.

The tutu is the main part of the costume. Its formation is an insanely complex and painstaking work. The most experienced seamstress can create only one such outfit per day! But it's just a tutu with a corset!

But if you don’t know how to hold a needle and thread at all, and the topic is how to sew a ballet tutu with your own hands, remains open, you can make a skirt from strips of medium hard tulle or dense organza with almost no sewing.

All we need is the right fabric and a wide elastic band. So let's get started!

First, let's take measurements from our child. We only need two measurements:

  • Waist circumference + 2 cm is the length of the elastic.
  • The length of the skirt is up to you. We multiply this figure by 2 + 2 cm - we get the length of the strips of fabric from which we will collect the skirt.

Cut the fabric into strips 20-25 cm wide. Sew the elastic into a ring and stretch it on the legs of the chair. We tie a strip of tulle on an elastic band so that the ends on different sides of the knot are equal to each other. We perform such manipulations with each strip. We do not tighten the knots so that the elastic band does not twist. The more stripes there are, the more magnificent the skirt. After the elastic band is full, the girl's tutu is ready! We decorate it with a satin ribbon, beads or rhinestones - it depends on your imagination or the idea of the choreographer.

Decorating a tutu skirt

The classic model of such a skirt is, as a rule, a simple and even ascetic version without finishing with any decorative materials. To enhance the elegance, you can decorate the product with ribbons, beads of various sizes, rhinestones, artificial flowers, etc. You can go even further in your imagination and cut out the top layer of such a skirt from thin guipure or lace. Along the edge, more skilled needlewomen havethe ability to sew a satin ribbon as a border. This will give the finished tutu extra volume and brightness. You can embroider the top layer of tulle with sparkling sequins. In general, the opportunity to make a skirt more elegant is endless! Stock up on patience, turn on your imagination - and forward to creative work!
