When knitting sweaters, sweaters, cardigans, dresses and other shoulder items, beginner needlewomen have a question about how to close the armhole. It should match the chosen pattern, be rounded and look neat.

Let's consider what an armhole is and how to close it properly.

A little about the armhole

Armhole is a cutout into which the sleeve of the shoulder product is sewn. Also, the armhole is present on things for which a sleeve is not provided (sleeveless jacket, T-shirt, sleeveless dress).

The neckline can be wide, narrow or elongated, depending on the product model.

Armhole - this is the so-called curved line, which should be knitted in a certain way. In addition to armholes, almost all types of necklines, sleeves, shoulders, shelves can be attributed to "curved lines".

Calculation of armhole shelf

Let's consider a ready-made calculation of the armhole of the left shelf, which you can use when knitting your products.

First you need to determine the number of loops in the width of the armhole (segment AB in the photo). Next, divide the resulting number of loops into four identical parts. If you couldn’t separate without a residue, then add it to the part where the side seam will go.

In each received part (except the first) loops again need to be divided into segments. Second segmentwe divide in this way: 3+3, the third - 2+2+2, the fourth - 1+1+1+1+1+1.

Mark this data on the pattern where the armhole passes. This will help you not to get confused in the reductions.

When the knitting of the shelf reaches the armhole, close six loops at the beginning of the front row. Next, knit the row to the end, turn the work over and in the wrong row close the last three loops. Continue decreasing to the fourth part, based on the calculations transferred to the pattern.

In the fourth part, decrease one loop in each front row.

After you make the armhole, knit six to seven rows without adding or decreasing. Next, you need to make a few additions (they are marked with “+” in the diagram). Increase by one loop three times at the same distance.

Following the same principle, close the armhole of the right shelf and backrest.

How to make an armhole with an elastic band?

In products where sleeves are not provided, the armhole remains open, so it needs to be beautifully designed. Consider a simple way to design a cutout with a 1x1 or 2x2 elastic band.

First, make the shoulder seam of the front and back and place the product right side up. Now cast on all the stitches that make up the armhole on circular needles. This can be done with a knitting needle or with a hook. Knit the first row with your chosen elastic band. Turn the work over and knit according to the pattern. Having knitted the desired width of the bar, close the loops in an elastic way. Work the second armhole in the same way. Sew the edges of the placket and sew the side seam at the same time.
