Do-it-yourself Martinichka is made from ordinary threads. She is an ancient Slavic amulet, a symbol of spring and new life. These little dolls are very popular among the South Slavic peoples. So, the Bulgarians, Hungarians, Romanians and Moldovans made them the same indispensable element on March 1 as we do the Christmas tree for the New Year.
A bit of history
This tradition originated in ancient times. The first martinichkas played an important role in the pagan rite of inviting spring. On this day, people sang special songs-chants and presented these dolls to each other.
In fact, a martinichka is a combination of two threads, white and red, intertwined into a cord. The first symbolizes winter and snow, and the second - spring, solar warmth, a new beginning in the life of nature. The ends of the crafts were decorated with pompoms, tassels, bells or coins. Today, this symbol is most often made in the form of a doll. In Bulgaria, these crafts were even given names - Penda and Peugeot.
On the first day of spring, you need to give martinichki from threads to your relatives, relatives and acquaintances. At the same time, it is necessary to wish for good, happiness and he alth. Girls and boys traditionally presented these crafts to each other as a symbol of their love. Then the products were decorated with clothes, wrists or hairstyles.
Charm of love, fidelity and happiness
Single and unmarried did not tie the ends of the ropes, but the married ones fastened them and cut them to the very knot as a sign that their heart was already taken. It was customary to wear such amulets until the trees bloomed. In other areas, they were not removed until the first stork arrived.
After that, martinichki dolls were tied to well-bearing trees with their own hands. As a rule, these were fruit varieties. In some regions, they were thrown onto the roof to make their happiness winged. Residents of other areas let crafts into the stream so that the current would take away troubles with them and wash away all the bad things that happened in life. At the same time, it was necessary to make a wish, which, according to traditional beliefs, must certainly come true.
Naturally, in large modern cities, it is hardly possible to notice storks or calculate exactly when apple and cherry trees began to bloom. Therefore, it is customary to wear martinichki in the first days of spring. In some countries, this period is extended until the 9th, and somewhere - until March 23 (the day of the vernal equinox). After that, the toys are hung on the trees, on which young foliage has already begun to appear.
Martinichki and children
Earlier, these crafts were made not only in honor of the arrival of the warm season, but also as a symbol of birth inthe child's family. In this case, the chrysalis clung to lovebirds, a traditional wedding amulet. Such a do-it-yourself martinichka could be created not only from red and white threads, but also from yarn of any color. This attribute of family happiness hung in the most conspicuous place in the house, which was called the red corner.
In addition to performing its functions as a symbol and amulet, this craft can also serve as a great helper in order to teach a child to needlework. There is nothing complicated in working on it, and the process itself is interesting and entertaining. You can choose any color scheme for the toy. In addition, the production of martinichkas has evolved over time, they have faces and even hairstyles that even the most inexperienced master can do.
Pre-training
So, for work we need the following tools and materials:
- The base on which you will wind the threads. The blank parameters determine the length of the doll. You can cut out a rectangle of suitable size from cardboard or take a small book.
- Threads. They can be of any type (mulina, wool, linen or plain silk). Please note: the thinner the material you choose, the neater the finished craft will look.
- Bead. It should be of medium size.
- Regular scissors.
Getting Started
How to make martinichki from threads? First, wind the selected material on a pre-prepared base. The thicker the yarn, the less curlsneed to be done, and vice versa - with thin threads you will have to complete more circles. When you start and finish winding, leave the long ends free.
Remove the finished bundle from the base and rewind it tightly with a thread. Thread a separate piece of yarn into a bead and attach over the same place of the workpiece. Now straighten the ends of the threads and attach them to the common bundle. You can also make a pendant out of them or make it separately.
Now make a twisted cord and attach it to the doll's head. Further, when creating a martinichka, the master class recommends making three or four turns with a new thread around the neck of the craft and tightening it onto a knot. After that, push the bead deep into the product and cover it.
Making arms and legs
To make hands for the doll, wind the thread around the base in the same way as you did earlier for the body. But in this case, you need to make fewer turns than before. Do not forget to leave a long tip at the start and finish of work. In addition, winding must necessarily begin and end on opposite sides of the warp.
Remove the finished bundle from the cardboard. Scissors do not yet need to touch it. Now just wrap the workpiece with the left ends of the thread, stepping back a little from the edges. In order for the pens to be more accurate, you can also insert the pencil into the loop that turned out. Before tying a knot, be sure to make three or four turns of thread around the workpiece.
The next step in creating a do-it-yourself martinichka doll is threading the hands in the body. Paste the one you just madestrip perpendicular to the first part, wrap the body under it with thread and tie tightly.
If you want to make a girl, cut the workpiece at the bottom to form a skirt. To make a boy, you need to divide the threads into two approximately identical parts and wind each of them separately at the bottom.
Other design options
Because the creation of these dolls is a very ancient tradition, many new versions of their design have appeared over time. Many needlewomen are constantly coming up with fresh ways to make a martinichka original. Consider some options for improving this amulet.
To make the image of a doll girl more interesting, you can braid her pigtails. To do this, wind a small bundle of threads separately on the base. Remove it and cut it on one side, and then thread the blank into the head of the craft and braid it.
Also, for a change, you can make the tips of the arms and legs not in the form of eyelets, but voluminous, like pompoms. Just cut them open and fluff them up.
If you want to weave your hands in the form of pigtails, the blank for them must be made longer than usual. For this you need a large base. Wrap and tighten one end by passing a pencil through it. Cut and braid the other. In this case, do not take out the pencil. Thanks to him, it will be more convenient for you to work. Fix the tip of the part, cut the loop left earlier and fluff it.
Do-it-yourself Martinichka can be made very bright and colorful. To achieve this effect, use several threads of different colors when working. All of them need to be wound on the base at the same time.
To create clothes for crafts, use the following technique. Make a little body according to the same principle as in the case of a one-color doll, but from two bundles of different colors. Each of them must be prepared separately. From one of them we will make an apron for the girl.
To do this, cut it from the bottom and put it on top of the body blank. If you want to dress a boy, follow the same steps, but place the cut line higher. Thus, you will get a caftan for him. Drag the clothes on the belt with a separate thread.
Decorate the face
You can also embroider a face on your crafts. To do this, you need to make only a few stitches in the places where the eyes, nose and mouth should be. Also try wrapping a flesh-colored band-aid around the head of the workpiece and draw facial features on it with felt-tip pens.
To hide the edges of the “skin” glued to the face, make a wig for the doll. It is made according to the same principle as the rest of the details: wind the threads on the base, collect, cut off the ends.
Attach it with superglue and you've got an updated modern martinichka. Pin it on your clothes with a pin and welcome spring with joy.
Making an octopus
The technique of how to make martinichki can also be applied to the creation of not only amulets, but also other toys. It's a very entertaining processwhich even a small child can master. Such work will not only occupy him, but also contribute to the development of imagination and fine motor skills. For example, you can teach your toddler how to create funny octopuses this way, which he can then play with.
Since the legs of the craft are made in the form of pigtails, working on them will also teach the child to braid hair. By the way, biologists say that in fact this marine inhabitant has only two legs, and the rest of its tentacle limbs are kind of hands. And they are amazing in their properties.
Each tentacle is equipped with two rows of suction cups, with which the octopus climbs high rocks and even walks along the ceilings of underwater caves. In addition, thanks to them, the animal can taste everything that it touches. Indeed, in them, as in the human language, there are special receptors that make it possible to understand whether an object is edible or not.
Such a do-it-yourself martinichka can be made from yarn of any color. Moreover, real octopuses can change the color of their skin. They do this in order to disguise themselves, or depending on their mood. For example, an animal in a calm state is brown, if frightened, it turns white, and when angry, it turns red.
Start creating
For work you will need the following materials:
- woolen yarn for the main blank;
- a little synthetic winterizer or rags;
- contrasting threads for tying crafts.
First wind the base material aroundcardboard rectangle or small book. Then remove the workpiece and drag it with a contrasting thread. In this case, it is necessary to retreat from the edge by a couple of centimeters. To make the craft look neater, insert a ruler or a thick marker into the large loop formed. Then cut this part from the bottom.
Now let's take care of the head. Insert a synthetic winterizer between the threads and straighten them so that the “stuffing” is not visible. To fix the shape of this part of the body, tightly tie a thread of the main color under it.
Weave tentacles
To make the legs, divide the bottom of the craft into 8 even parts and braid each of them into a pigtail. Drag the end of each leg with a contrasting thread. To prevent the strands from mixing, separate the fragment you are working with from the rest with a piece of cardboard.
You can cut eyes and a mouth out of paper or felt by attaching them to the craft using superglue. You can also try to embroider a face with colored threads.
Now you know what martinichki are, how to make them with your own hands, and what varieties of such toys exist. By applying this technique of work, you can come up with your own unusual creations in this style.
