In any weather from September to April, a circular scarf is indispensable. Such an accessory is called a snood, or a scarf collar. Its charm and numerous advantages have already been appreciated by many girls. The main advantage of a snood is that it allows you to wrap your neck securely and tightly. Also, being thrown over the head, it may well replace a warm hat, while not causing such unpleasant consequences as a crumpled hairstyle and a mark from the edge of the headdress on the forehead.

Types of circular scarves

Given the wide range of consumers, it is not surprising that there are several types of circular scarves. They are classified based on the knitting method used. You can crochet a scarf, the pattern of which includes only single crochets (SC) and single crochet or double crochet stitches (CCH, CC2H). Such a product is considered dense.

The presence of air patterns in the patternloops (VP) turns snood into an openwork product. It is worth clarifying that an ornament with through holes does not mean at all that the scarf will cease to be warm. All its warming qualities will be preserved if warm yarn with villi is used. For example, if you crochet a snood scarf (the pattern of which includes a very large number of chains of VP and large holes), it will be warm if you knit it from angora or mohair. Natural fiber in the thread must be at least 50%.

In addition to the density of knitting, snoods are distinguished by size:

  • Long (two or more wraps around the neck).
  • Short scarf (one turn).

Both are very comfortable, but the long one looks more voluminous.

Features of making warm snoods

Only a real winter scarf (crochet) can fully protect against piercing wind and snow. The scheme, working tool and yarn directly affect the quality and appearance of the product.

To get a scarf like in the photo below, you need to purchase a very thick thread and a large hook.

Indicative yarn thickness range: 50-100 m/100 grams. The size of the hook should be selected individually for the yarn that is selected for the manufacture of the product. However, experienced knitters recommend using a tool one size larger than needed for a particular yarn. Thus, a crochet scarf (the pattern and pattern does not matter) will become softer.

If you tie a snood tightly, it can be considered spoiled, since itwill lose its plasticity and become rigid.

Patterns that may be applicable for knitting warm snoods

Don't choose too complex a pattern to crochet a thick scarf. The scheme and description of elementary patterns are perfect for working with a thick thread. For example, you can apply the simplest RLS or SSN. For a change, they can be knitted not for both upper “pigtails”, but only for one of them. The resulting canvas will have embossed horizontal stripes. Other simple patterns can also be used.

If the thread selected for work has a thickness of 200-400 m / 100 grams, then the choice of suitable patterns is significantly expanded. Here you can already apply patterns with a large number of CCHs, with "bushes" or lush columns.

When knitting openwork scarves, you can choose any pattern you like.

Short snood

This accessory is designed to be wrapped around the neck once. In order to crochet a scarf (the pattern can be any) so that it turns out to be voluminous, it should be made high. As a rule, the shape of such a product when folded approaches a square (height is equal to width). The optimal dimensions are considered to be 35 x 35 cm. But if the knitter plans to wear a scarf on her head, she should make it higher (about 50 cm).

You can knit a short snood in both directions: along or across. You just need to take into account the distribution of bandspattern. Scarves with longitudinal stripes look more attractive. If we consider the gray scarf proposed below in the photo, then its knitting begins with a long VP chain.

To calculate the number of stitches and rows needed to make a 70 cm wide x 35 cm high fabric, you must knit a reference sample.

Further, the workflow includes knitting an even fabric with alternating several patterns. For decoration, this model is equipped with fasteners, but most often the edges of the fabric are sewn or initially knitted in a round. In the latter case, there is no seam, which is very convenient for an item such as a scarf.

Specificity of a long snud

When knitting an accessory designed to be wrapped around the neck twice, you must also prepare a sample of the pattern. A long crochet scarf (the pattern can be dense or openwork) is woven almost the same as a short one.

Having chosen the direction of knitting, they pick up the VP and start making the fabric. Sizes that allow you to use the long snood as efficiently as possible:

  • Width - 30-40 cm.
  • Folded product length - 45-70 cm.

There is no point in exceeding the specified length, since in this case you can crochet an oversized and uncomfortable scarf. The scheme and description of many patterns are given in accordance with their rapports. For circular products, this is of particular importance. It is necessary to ensure that the canvas consists of whole rapports. The "cropped" halves look very messy.
