Jacquard pattern on knitwear has been fashionable for many seasons in a row. Why is a multi-colored ornament called jacquard? How to knit such a pattern? Why are some of them called "lazy"? We will try to answer these questions in this article.

How did the pattern get its name?

At the beginning of the nineteenth century, a special loom appeared, which made it possible to create patterned fabrics by intricate weaving of threads. It was invented by Joseph Maria Jacquard. From his name received the name and pattern.

At home, you can knit such patterns with knitting needles. Schemes, as a rule, are simple, and even a novice craftswoman will understand them.

Jacquard patterns are quite intricate, with many weaves of threads and colors, but there are some that are quite easy to perform.

Difficulties in knitting multi-strand patterns

Knitting a multi-colored ornament from several balls at once is a rather difficult task and only an experienced knitter can do it. It will take a lot of patience and attention - over the course of a row, you have to change the threads several times to knit a pattern. Difficulties are alsothe fact that the balls are tangled and rolled, and even those threads that are not involved in knitting pull the fabric together, passing along the wrong side.

If the vertical gap between two colors is more than two rows, then you have to additionally cross the threads. This is necessary so that the new thread presses the previous one, which has already been knitted. If this is not done, vertical holes will form in the canvas.

All these subtleties slow down the process of creating a product and affect the quality of work.

Why are some jacquards "lazy"?

Simple patterns for knitting lovers are called “lazy jacquard”. The schemes are arranged in such a way that two rows of knitting, one after the other, are knitted from one ball, and other colors appear from the loops of the previous rows, which are removed or pulled out in a special way. This is very convenient when working, since the craftswoman does not get several balls under her hands, the canvas itself does not shrink on the wrong side due to thread broaches.

Sometimes in the literature on knitting there are such names as false jacquard, lazy ornament or simply lazy pattern. Perhaps such names are given to these knittings because they do not require a high level of skill and great experience in knitting, besides, they knit much faster than classic jacquards.

It is no coincidence that many knitters use lazy jacquard in their products. Pattern patterns are designed in such a way that in the process of knitting a row it is not necessary to change the thread, every two rows are created from one ball. This makes the job easier and faster.

Features of creation

Let's figure out how to knit a lazy jacquard. His schemes, like all others, consist of facial and purl rows. Pattern features are as follows:

• Firstly, both rows - front and back - are knitted with one thread from one ball. It changes only on the side, on the right edge of the canvas.
• Secondly, when the front rows are knitted (they are usually odd in the diagrams), the thread that is knitted is left at work in the removed loops. And vice versa, when purl (or even) rows are knitted, the thread is led in front of the canvas. As a result of this rule, the broaches, just like in classic jacquards, remain on the wrong side.
• Thirdly, when creating purl rows, the loops are knitted according to the scheme, in the same way as they lie on the knitting needle (usually purl). If a slipped loop is encountered, then it is again removed untied, following the rule indicated above.

Where is the colorful pattern applied?

Knitwear is always fashionable and popular. Ornaments in folk style remain relevant at all times. Bright and multi-color patterns are used in children's blouses, trousers, overalls, and patterned mittens are also popular. Many products are knitted with lazy jacquard. Women's pullovers, jackets and other outfits are usually decorated with a knitted ornament of two or three colors. And for men's knitted vests and sweaters, as a rule, strict and restrained two-tone motifs are used.

The perfect pattern for knitting a hat, sweater or mittens is a lazy jacquard. The patterns are quite common. The creativity some knitters use to create products leads them to come up with new “lazy” patterns. This is not as easy as it seems, because it is necessary to take into account the patterns that we noted above.

Vertical stripes pattern

This jacquard is a vertical alternation of stripes of two colors. It is perfect for creating clothes for babies, mittens and mitts, it will look good on a hat, it can be used on cuffs and other finishing elements. The loops are positioned so that the fabric looks great when transitioning to any knit elastic.

So, let's choose two colors of yarn and get ready to knit a lazy jacquard with knitting needles. The master class includes a step-by-step description of how to create this pattern.

Stitches set

It is necessary to type on the knitting needles with a thread of one of the two selected colors the number of loops that will be divided by four, then add three more loops to maintain the symmetry of the pattern and two for the edge loops. For example, we knit a small pattern and cast on 20 stitches (5fragments of 4 loops), 3 - for symmetry and 2 edge. 25 stitches total.

1st row

Use a thread of the same color as the loops. The sequence for creating a row will be as follows:

• leave the edge loop (just remove, leaving the thread before work);
• we knit three facial ones, we remove one loop without knitting - we repeat this several times (in our sample - four);
• at the end of the row - three facial;
• edge loop, which we knit with the front one.

2nd row

We continue to work with the thread of the same color. First, remove the edge loop without knitting. Then we knit 3 facial ones, after which we simply remove 1 loop, skipping the thread in front of the canvas. We repeat this procedure several times. We knit the last edge loop again with the front one.

3rd row

Introduce the thread of the second color. Edge loop (just remove). We will knit 1 front loop, after which we will repeat this sequence several times: we remove one loop, passing the thread behind it, three - we knit the front ones. After we repeat this pattern to the end of the row, two loops should remain. We knit one front for the symmetry of the pattern, the second is edging, we also knit it with the front one.

4th row

Use the same thread as in the third row. At the beginning of the row, as usual, there is an edge loop, which, as with all work, you just need to remove. Next, you need to knit 1 front loop, repeating it several times for symmetry: remove one, while leading the thread in front of the loop, and knit three with the front ones. Knit again at the end of the rowone front and one edge loops.

So we knitted to the end of the scheme. The lazy jacquard is knitted further, while the work from the first to the fourth row is repeated in the sequence.

Diagonal relief pattern

We bring to your attention another lazy jacquard with knitting needles. A master class with a description of knitting a fabric from threads of two colors, a photo and a diagram are given below. When knitting this pattern, all the rules of lazy jacquard, which we described above, apply. The result is a spectacular knit in which diagonal stripes of two colors alternate. This ornament is suitable for a sweater, vest, mittens, cuffs of socks and other products.

Description of knitting pattern

Step 1st. Cast on loops and knit a row with a thread of one of the selected colors. The number of loops should be a multiple of six plus two edge loops. We will have 20 loops. We will not count this row in the pattern, it is needed for the base.

Step 2. Let's get to the pattern. In the first row we take a yarn of a different color.

1. First, we form an edge loop, simply by removing it on a knitting needle, and we knit the next one with a new thread. In this row, we begin the creation of the pattern itself, for which we alternately knit and remove the loops, according to the diagram and description. We knit two facial loops (for the symmetry of the pattern), and then repeat this combination: one - remove, five - knit facial. In our sample, there will be two such repetitions, after which the removed loop and three facial ones are performed again. A series is endingedge loop.
2. The second row is knitted with the same thread on the reverse side, while the removed loops are removed, and the rest are knitted as purl. This is how all even rows will be executed in our work, so they are not indicated on the diagram.
3. The third row starts with an edge loop, then - one front and one removed loop. Next, a combination for repetition: three facial, removed, facial, removed. We knit this several times. At the end of the row, three are knit and removed. We finish with an edge loop.
4. The fourth row is knitted like all wrong side.
5. In the fifth row, after the edge loop, 4 facial loops are knitted, and after that, as in the first row, the alternation of one removed and five facial loops is repeated. At the end of our sample, one removed and one front knit, and after them - hem.
6. Sixth row - purl.
7. After the initial selvedge, knit, slip, knit, slip, and then repeat the combination (as in the third row) of three knit, slip, knit, slip. At the end of the row, two front and final hem are knitted.
8. Eighth row knit purl and removed according to the pattern.
9. The ninth row after the edge loop immediately starts repeating the combination of one removed and five facial ones. We complete the edge.
10. In the tenth row we knit, as in all wrong side.
11. The eleventh row starts with an edge loop and after immediately - a repeating combination (as in the third row) of three knit, slip, knit and slip stitches. The row ends with an edge loop.
12. Twelfth row – purl.

Step 3. Repeat the pattern you wantnumber of times, knitting alternately from the first to the 12th row.

If even after the detailed descriptions given, there are still questions about how to knit this lazy jacquard, the diagrams should bring final clarity. Below we show a diagram where the cells of two colors indicate the rows of knitting. An empty cell indicates a regular front loop, and a cell with a J indicates that the loop needs to be removed. The purl rows are not marked on the diagram, because, as we said above, they are knitted with the same thread on the wrong side, according to the pattern: the removed loops are removed, and the rest are knitted purl.

Lazy jacquards - beautiful, simple and practical

When knitting such patterns, the remnants of yarn are usually used, you can also knit from threads that were previously a knitted fabric that was unraveled.
