A beautifully made bed is the decoration of the bedroom. An elegant quilted bedspread will be an excellent element of room decor. The right texture, color and design will instantly transform the interior, giving it sophistication and charm.
Making a quilted bedspread is easy, although the job requires some sewing skills. But if you try, even a novice craftswoman will cope with this task.
This article is for those who want to learn the basic tricks and secrets of creating beautiful decoration for the bed.
Selection of materials
Today, naturalness is in fashion, and therefore quilted bedspreads made of cotton are the best solution for any bedroom. Linen, bamboo or cotton are suitable for such decoration. If the environmental friendliness of fabrics is not a priority, then you can consider mixed and synthetic fabrics, which are characterized by a special gloss. So, for example, satin materials are perfect for bedspreads, as well as any curtain fabrics.
It is best to choose from the fabrics intended for sewing curtains. They have better density andwidth, and wear-resistant qualities, unlike materials for tailoring. Quilted bedspreads made of cotton can also be sewn from natural fabrics for curtains. Such fabrics with a width of 220-240 cm allow you to make a product without joints and extra seams.
The lining fabric should also have a good density so that it does not wear out faster than the top of the bedspread. Large width curtain fabrics are also suitable for this purpose.
In addition to the main and lining fabric, you will need a synthetic winterizer. Its thickness is also of great importance. So, for example, a beautiful airy blanket will come out when using a thick padding polyester. Under it, possible folds from an unfolded blanket will not be visible if the quilted bedspread was thrown over the bed in a hurry. In addition, when using a sintepon fabric with a large thickness, the stitched pattern will be more pronounced. But this has its drawback, because working with a thick canvas is more difficult.
Measuring and fabric calculation
In order for the bedspread to fit well on the bed, you should take measurements from it: the length of the bed and the width, the height of the mattress or the height of the bed with the mattress to the floor, if you plan to make a bedspread that covers the bed completely. When measuring, you do not need to make any allowances, all the necessary centimeters for processing are laid down when cutting.
Cut fabrics
Quilted bedspread can be made in different versions. It can be just a large rectangle that pounces on the bed, or bedspreads with ruffles and frills, hanging along the edge of the mattress. Cutting and calculation of materials depend on the version. Each one is good in its own way.
Option one: one-piece fabric
How to sew a quilted bedspread, duplicated with padding polyester throughout the canvas? To do this, the fabric is cut in the form of a regular rectangle with sides equal to: the length of the mattress + its height and the width of the mattress + 2 of its height. At the same time, the corners on the opposite side of the headboard should be rounded so that the bedspread folds into beautiful tails. When cutting, add 2 cm around the perimeter for processing the edges. In the same way, the lining fabric should be cut out, but when cutting the synthetic winterizer, allowances are not made.
Working with canvas
After cutting, fold the main fabric and filler and sweep them first along the perimeter, and then along the pattern lines. To do this, it is best to spread the canvas on the floor so that the layers do not move during work. If sewn-in additional decorative elements are planned, then it is better to stitch them before combining with the padding polyester. Also, before combining, it is necessary to make markings on the front side of the product with chalk or a tailor's pencil. When working with a thin padding polyester, you can not use a basting, but chop off the details with tailor's needles.
One Piece Bedspread Design Ideas
They will help to beautifully arrange a quilted bedspread photo of finished works. It all depends on the chosen canvas for the front side. If it's a striped fabric, thenit is best to quilt the product along their borders, if these are some kind of zigzags or waves, then, naturally, the main lines of the pattern should be repeated. This will give the drawing volume and make it more expressive.
In the case of a plain fabric, it is better to use the method of stitching the repetition of cuts around the perimeter, in some quilted seams you can add fringe, beaded braid or simple fabric frills. It can be a contrasting addition or made in the same color. There are absolutely no restrictions, it all depends on the imagination. This is the place for satin and organza ribbons, lace, seams, ribbons and even sew-on stones.
It should be noted that such a bedspread will visually enlarge the bed, and therefore if there is not much space in the room, then it is better to use the following option.
Option two: quilted bedspread with sewn-on frill
This performance is somewhat different from the previous one. Here you will need a slightly different calculation of the fabric, since the product consists of two parts: the base and the frill. For the first element, you need a cut equal to the width and length of the bed + 2-3 cm, for the second - a strip of fabric equal to the height of the bed from the top of the mattress to the floor and the length of the perimeter, multiplied by three. This frill can be compound, sewn from separate segments.
The manufacturing process is similar to the first option: the front fabric is combined with synthetic winterizer, washed and stitched on the machine. Then they move on to work with the frill. Along the edge of the top of the strip, the fabric is collected in folds (plain or bow). frill bottomcan be overlaid, folded and stitched, giving an appropriate allowance when cutting, or processed with an oblique inlay.
After the finished element is sewn around the perimeter of the finished blank of the bedspread, leaving the cut at the headboard free.
Such products should not be overloaded with additional finishing elements, especially if the fabric is textured or has a pronounced pattern. It will be enough quilting on the main fabric and tight folds on the sides. If the fabric is very simple, then at the junction of the connection you can sew a braid with beads to match the fabric.
Working with lining
Sewing on the lining is one of the easiest parts of the job. This element is sewn in the same way in both versions. The lining fabric is cut to the same size as the main fabric. It is folded face to face with the base, all folds are tucked in, if any, and sewn around the perimeter, leaving about 30 cm open in the middle of the side of the headboard. After the product is turned out and slightly steamed with the minimum heating temperature of the iron. At the final stage of work, the open hole should be stitched or manually sewn up. To stabilize the edge, you can lay a line around the perimeter, retreating from it 2-3 cm.
A chic quilted bedspread, the manufacturing master class of which is described above, can be easily created at home using a household sewing machine. Fantasy, diligence and attentiveness are the best helpers in this matter.
Textiles in the interior of the bedroom and decorative elements
Spread inThe interior of the bedroom is one of the key elements that sets the mood for the whole room. Therefore, it is very important to choose the right color that will be combined with the color of the furniture and interior decoration.
Quilted cotton bedspreads look great in an ensemble with curtains made of identical material. And in this case, it is better to leave all the decorations in the form of fringe, braid and other decorative elements for decorating the bed. At the same time, the bedspread itself can be made in a calm style, and originally designed pillows will act as decor. Round, square, rectangular, large and small - they will give a special charm, make the bed even more attractive and cozy.
Practical tips for working with fabrics
If satin fabric or cotton is used in the work, then they should be sewn with a thin needle and small steps. This will avoid ugly gathers at the seams. In this case, the canvas cannot be pulled so that the needle does not break. It should also be noted that satin and cotton do not like steam treatment, as a result of which stains may remain on them that will not go away even after washing. Also, during processing, accuracy should be observed, since even holes remain on the canvases from even the thinnest needle.
But linen and bamboo fabric are not so whimsical. Here you can also take a needle with the number 85 or 90, and sew at the maximum step, which simplifies the work.
