Everyone knows how convenient it is when there are pockets on clothes, where you can put small and often necessary things. When sewing clothes, various types of pockets are used. This is both overhead and welt on the fabric. In our article, we will look at how to properly make a pocket in the side seam. Such details are used mainly in sports or loose clothing. They are convenient in that they do not puff up at all, it is not clear that there is something there. Yes, and it is very convenient to keep your hands in these pockets.

Features of pockets in the seam

Often such pockets are made in the side seam, but they can also be placed in the relief folds of the product. It all depends on the style of the dress. You can find such pockets in shorts, wide skirts, dresses, coats. The lining in such products is made either from the main fabric or from the lining. You can make bright contrasting ones that will be visible to others. You can also make them in two parts. The top of the pocket will be the main fabric and the bottom will be the lining. This is done so that the pocket is not visible.

Pattern

To make a pattern correctly, you need to draw a pattern on paper. To do this, the pocket depth and width are measured. A rectangle is drawn. Do not forget to add 1 cm on each side for seams and overlock. From the long side, measure the pocket inlet in the side seam and add 4 cm in length. Then, using patterns, draw a lower rounding for the pocket. The top of the pocket will be flatter and the bottom will be rounded.

In the photo above, the pattern is on the reverse side. Before sewing a pocket in the side seam of the dress, the parts must be turned over with the rounded side down. Tailoring is carried out on the wrong side of the garment.

Pocket preparation

Before sewing a piece to a garment, it needs to be prepared. To do this, the two parts of the pattern on the round side are sewn together and the edges are processed using an overlock or overlock foot of a sewing machine. From below, on the straight side of the pocket, 4 cm is measured, and this segment is sewn at a distance of 1-1.5 cm from the edge. This is done to deepen the opening of the pocket so that the things that will be there do not fall out.

Approximate pocket sizes for an adult woman are as follows:

1. The length of the hole in the side seam - 15-16 cm.

2. From the waist line, the pocket should be located at a distance of 10-12 cm.

3. The pattern rectangle is 20-22 cm long and 14-15 cm wide.

On the side seams, where you planned to sew pockets, you need to doprotrusions, about 3 cm, and smooth them in the opposite direction. This prevents the lining fabric from being visible when the pocket is sewn into the side seam.

First way

This method of processing a pocket in the side seam is used when the pocket is sewn separately, and then on the wrong side the edges of its flat part are sewn to the skirt valance from one side and the other.

First, both edges of the pocket are attached, and then two fabrics are formed - the main and lining - with an overlock or an overlock foot of a sewing machine. Then the product is turned to the front side and the side edge is carefully ironed through a damp cotton fabric.

Second way

If you want to hide the lining so that it is not visible, then proceed differently. At the side seams on the clothes, three centimeters of fabric are left on the ledges, to which parts of the pocket will subsequently be sewn. First, one piece of the pocket pattern is sewn to the ledge, then the other is sewn separately to the second side of the skirt. Then the two parts are made out with an overlock foot and carefully smoothed inside.

Then work is already on the stitching and processing of the pocket itself. To do this, first we attach 4 cm down, and then along the entire circumference of the rounded part of the pattern. Then all edges are overlocked. It remains only to iron all the seams and turn the product on the front side.

This type of pocket is considered by masters of cutting and sewing the easiest option. Indeed, compared to the welt counterpart, it is not difficult to sew a pocket into the side seam. After reading the detailed description, any master will be able to cope with this task in a matter of minutes.

Do not forget that if you are sewing on a bright and contrasting pocket that is visible to the eye, then you need to use the first method. If you are making overhangs and the pocket will be completely hidden in the side seam, then the second method will suit you. Good luck!
