Each of us has a thing that seems to have outlived its usefulness, but for some reason it is dear to our hearts. And there is no way to get rid of it. But keeping it in plain sight is awkward. And sometimes you just want to bring something new and beautiful into your life, but there is no money for designer jewelry.

But both in the first and in the second case there is a way out, and, oddly enough, it is the same, and this is decoupage.

Basic tools

The main tools that are needed for this lesson are beautiful napkins, glue, varnish, brushes and scissors. As you can see, no specific or super-expensive materials are needed. Despite the availability and simplicity of the method, the result can exceed all your wildest expectations.

Decoupage tools

  • The first is flat brushes. Their width should be from 0.8 to 2.5 cm, the best choice is a thin artificial pile, as they are the easiest to apply varnish or glue.
  • Second - small sharp scissors, if desired, you can take several of them with different blade shapes.
  • Third is acrylic lacquer. Water based varnish would be ideal.basis. This is not a prerequisite. You can use any varnish for decoupage of a bottle of champagne, but this one is more convenient. It will not darken over time and is odorless. Lacquer does not have to be transparent. If you use a composition with some kind of effect, for example, decorated with sparkles or having an aged effect, then your work will become even more individual. You can also take a special varnish for decoupage, but it will cost more than a regular building one, which is also suitable for this purpose.
  • The fourth is stationery. This is an eraser, a pencil and scissors.
  • The fifth item is glue. Here, too, the choice is yours. You can use PVA glue, which is sold at budget prices, or specialized for decoupage, but it will cost much more.
  • For the choice of material, see below.

Where is it used and why

In general, the decoupage technique is the transfer of a pattern to a certain material and fixing it on top with a layer of varnish. As you can see, everything is banal simple.

You can use this technique on almost any surface, the main condition is that the latter be even and not porous. Do you want to decorate an old table? You are welcome! Do you dream of refreshing earthenware or porcelain dishes? Why not! Do you have a favorite plastic toy and want to transform it? Forward! Tired of a glass vase with its boring transparency? So let exotic flowers bloom on it!

In this article we will talk in more detail about the decoupage technique in general and how to make decoupage of bottles for the New Year with our own hands.

What else is needed

Perhaps it is worth explaining in more detail what tools you still need.

  • When applying acrylic paint to the base, you will need a sponge. Unfortunately, after it the surface becomes rough, which means that it should be smoothed out with a brush. In this case, it does not matter whether the brush is flat or round, as long as its size is convenient for use on the surface you are working with.
  • Thin art brushes are also useful - in order to accurately draw the contours and emphasize the necessary details.
  • It will be convenient to apply varnish with rollers, but not those used for walls, but smaller.
  • If you wish, you can use the palette, but this is not necessary. It can easily be replaced by an ordinary disposable plate.
  • Acrylic paints. They are needed in order to touch up or finish the drawing, making your picture more complete.
  • Sandpaper. Depending on the material on which the drawing will be, the grain should be chosen either medium - 250-400, or finer - 600-800. Which paper to use also depends on the stage of processing. Medium is used for primary processing, and small for final grinding.
  • Ground. It is used on wood surfaces to reduce their absorbency.
  • The next item is also needed for wooden surfaces. This is a specialized putty. It is only necessary if the surface being used has anydefects and irregularities.
  • The last item is the material with which the main drawing will be applied.

Material for decoupage: three-layer napkins

The main advantage is the low price of the material - from 15 rubles. Usually, only the top layer of napkins is used, on which, in fact, the pattern is located. But for beginners, this is not the easiest option. Since the tissue layer is very thin, it tends to wrinkle, bubble, or even tear.

Therefore, this type of decoration is best adopted after some practice.

Rice paper

The second drawing method is more suitable for beginners, as it is much easier. In this case, use a special decoupage rice paper with a pattern of your choice.

Rice paper

The advantage of this method is the ease of use of this pattern. In specialized stores, such jewelry is sold in different formats and colors. Rice paper does not deform when in contact with water and stretches well.

The only downside is the price of this material, which starts from 60 rubles.

Decoupage cards

There are also special cards for decoupage on plain paper. Such cards are suitable only for a perfectly flat surface. The paper does not stretch or conform to the surface as it did with rice paper.

This paper can be with a variety of designs and have a different format. In addition, it differs indensity. The minimum cost of such cards starts from 30 rubles apiece.

Photo paper

Another way to draw a picture is to use photo paper. The main advantage of this method is that the image can be one hundred percent unique.

Need printer, transparent file. You need to look at the drawings, some need to be flipped in a computer in a mirror image before printing. Otherwise it looks wrong. Example: butterflies, snowmen and snowflakes don't care, but Westminster Bridge is to the left of Big Ben, and nothing else.

When decoupage using photographic paper, its density should be from 110 to 180 g/sq. m. The image must be dried from 6 to 12 hours in order to avoid unpleasant surprises. After that, it is worth at least three layers to cover it with acrylic varnish, but it is better in 4 or 5 layers, to be sure. Next, soak the paper properly in well-warm water, about 20 minutes.

After that, remove the varnish layer with a pattern, because this is exactly what is needed for decoupage. This has to be done very carefully. Further actions are similar to how they do with napkins. On the surface to be decorated, prepared in advance, walk with glue, fix with varnish after drying.

In fact, there are many interesting ways of decoupage, including the creation of voluminous jewelry, but all of them will be understandable and accessible only to those who have been decoupage for a long time. The easiest way to start mastering the decoupage technique is to stick large fragments.

Patterns

After you have chosen what exactly youare going to apply a pattern, you should think about what specific pattern you want to see on your product. If you still decide to use napkins, then you will have to stuff your hand for some time so that it lies on the product evenly and without bubbles, you will also need to make sure that the napkin does not tear. When you can do this, you can move on and learn more advanced techniques.

For decorating New Year's bottles, patterns such as various snowflakes, snow-covered houses, beautiful candles, cute animals, bright rowan clusters, beautiful Christmas trees, both with and without toys, spruce branches with a bow, gifts, snowmen, Santa Claus with the Snow Maiden and everything that your imagination is enough for.

As an example, we will describe the process of decoupage of bottles with napkins.

Step One

We will describe the decoupage of bottles step by step. In the photos posted in the review, you can see how beautiful the product is in the end. But first, you will have to work with the quality of the base on which the drawing will be located. First of all, it is worth washing the bottle to get rid of the label, then level the surface to the maximum. Must be coated with specialized primer and painted with white paint.

To decoupage bottles of champagne for the New Year, it is better to use napkins with winter and bright patterns that create a festive atmosphere. It is necessary to apply white paint in order for the drawing to be brighter.

A napkin inthree or more layers need to be separated - separate the layer with the pattern from the rest.

On a dark or colored surface, the pattern will not stand out as much as on white. Paint should be applied to any surface, be it wood, ceramics or plastic. Sometimes it is necessary to apply several coats of paint so that it is better fixed. For decoupage of bottles with your own hands, this is also necessary.

Step two

Another thing to think about is the material with which you will glue the drawing. You have a choice: PVA glue or glue stick, varnish, special glue, egg white. Gluing with varnish is just as convenient as with glue, the only difference is that after varnishing, it will no longer be possible to correct flaws, because it makes the drawing and the product a single whole. That is why those who are just learning to work with decoupage usually use glue to be able to fix the flaws.

PVA glue is usually diluted with water one to one. But even with this method, when working with napkins, problems arise due to the fragility of the material.

Glue stick can be a great solution, but it also has its downsides. This glue is best used for smooth and slippery surfaces, where there is a higher chance of carefully smoothing out all the wrinkles and bubbles.

For decoupage of the New Year's bottle of champagne, this will be the best option. Egg white is also a specific material and requires your own skills when working with it.

For the first decoupage work, you should choose a small object, it is also worth looking for the shape of the product as simply as possible in order to get used to working in thistechnique.

To stick a napkin, glue can be applied both to the object itself and to the napkin. It depends on what is more comfortable for you. The most important thing is not to forget that even the slightest folds should not remain, only then your drawing will be beautiful and pleasing to the eye.

After applying the drawing, it must be allowed to dry. If you don't want to wait, you can speed up the process with a regular hair dryer.

If the surface to be decorated is fairly even, you can do it even easier, without having to fiddle with bubbles and leveling the napkin. It is necessary to go over the surface on which the drawing is applied thoroughly with glue and let it dry, after which, apply the necessary pattern to the place where the glue is located, cover it all with baking paper on top and, starting from the edge, go over the necessary area with an iron.

Glue under the influence of temperature will impregnate the napkin. For decoupage of bottles for the New Year, this is the easiest and fastest option. After that, you need to go over the top again with glue and let it dry.

Step three

After preliminary preparations, you can apply a pattern. And here you can go in several ways. It depends on the size and shape of the piece you are working with. On a flat surface, you can apply the entire pattern at once.

But it happens that the surface is curved, for example, the pattern should be on a vase. In this case, you should divide the drawing into fragments. This can be done by tearing the napkin.

Which way to choose depends on the pattern. If it has clearly defined boundaries, and it has a largeformat, it is better to cut, but if the pattern is small and sticks close to each other, then it should be torn, so it is easier to match the edges.

Step four

It is necessary to process the edges of the pattern on the product. And here you can either cut off the unsuccessful sidewalls evenly and tint the pattern, or simply wrap the edges of the napkin on the back of the product.

Only the first option is suitable for decoupage of bottles. If, after the drawing has completely dried, you notice a crease in the drawing, then there is nothing to worry about, you can just gently sand the unsuccessful area, you just need to make sure that the rest of the drawing does not touch. Step five. After all of the above, it is worth covering the bottle with acrylic varnish, this is the best material. It is worth going over with varnish at least 2 or 3 times, each time waiting for complete drying, in order to fix the drawing as best as possible.

Then you can decorate as you wish.
