Who would have thought that natural materials such as vine and straw could be replaced with plain paper? But modern needlewomen have come up with a way to weave baskets, vases, caskets from newspaper tubes. This is a very exciting activity, for which you first need to prepare the material, and only then weave. But the vine with straws must also first be prepared for work: they require special processing, soaking, steaming. It is much easier with paper, and a basket of newspapers almost does not differ from natural material. Finished products are very beautiful, especially for those craftswomen who already have practical experience.
Preparing Consumables
There are no problems with the basic material today: every person has a large number of newspapers, advertising sheets and magazines at home. Do not throw them away: they can be put into an interesting business - you get a wonderful basket of newspapers. What will be required for needlework, besides newspapers and magazines? You definitely need scissors, PVA glue, a glue gun, a clerical knife. The bottom of the baskets can be woven, or made fromcardboard. Therefore, several pieces of cardboard should also be prepared. You will also need double sided tape. To give the finished product a resemblance to a vine, the basket must be painted. For this, there must be a stain. But many paint products white: water-based white paint may also be required. To give strength and protection from moisture, varnish is applied as the last layer - its basis should also be water. A stapler, clips, or clothespins are optional supplies.
Vine making method
Since products are woven from newspaper tubes, the first thing to do is prepare the tubes.
- To do this, newspapers and magazine sheets should first be cut into strips measuring 10 by 30 cm. It is convenient to do this with a sharp stationery knife.
- To twist the tubes from these strips, you will need a thin knitting needle 3 mm.
- We start twisting obliquely, placing the needle at an acute angle. Acting in this way, you can get the desired size of the tube. It is worth doing several times - and all subsequent ones will turn out very easily and quickly.
- Preparing the tubes, use glue: a small amount is applied to the tip so that it does not unwind. It can be PVA or stationery glue.
- Newspaper tube weavers know that when twisting them, one end should be slightly wider than the other - this is required in order to lengthen them during weaving.
Another way to make material
There are morea simple way to make material for weaving baskets: these are flat strips from the same newspapers. Strips are cut, as for the tubes, only this time they do not need to be twisted: they are folded along several times to get the same width of the tape. Of these, a braid is made in a simple way, which will become the bottom of the basket. Such weaving is possible even for a child - this does not need to be specially trained.
How to make a basket from a newspaper
By placing the strips crosswise, we make the bottom. The extreme strips are fixed with a stapler. When the dimensions are sufficient, you should move on to vertical weaving of the walls. When they reach the desired height, weaving ends, everything is fixed with a stapler, and the excess is cut off. The top edge is glued with one continuous strip, and a do-it-yourself newspaper basket is ready! If desired, you can make a pen for it and paint the product. But many people like it, it is the colorful look, as shown in the photo below.
The more labor intensive way
But still, newspaper tubes make baskets more beautiful. They are more like products from the vine. To make such a basket, you need to spend more labor than the previous product. Painted white and decorated with lace and flowers, it will please the eye and can be a wonderful gift. When the required number of tubes has already been prepared, work can begin. If you perform weaving from newspaper tubes step by step, you get a similarbasket.
White Basket Workshop
- Work starts from the bottom: eight tubes are crossed, and the process of weaving in a circle begins.
- When the bottom becomes the right size, weaving goes to the walls.
- You need to follow the tubes: if there are short tips, they should be increased. To do this, the tail of the new tube is smeared with glue and inserted into the short residue, which must be lengthened.
- So that the weaving does not fall apart, the vertical tubes are fixed with clothespins.
- When the desired height is reached, weaving stops, excess ponytails are cut off, bent inward and glued. The place of gluing is fixed with a clothespin and left to dry.
- If you think about a pen, then two tubes are not cut off, but are woven in the form of an arc.
Rectangular baskets
There is another way to use leftover newspaper tubes. Weaving, the master class of which is described above, is considered classic and is used in all works. Only the pattern, shape, size of the future product changes. You can not weave the bottom of the basket: instead, use cardboard, to which the tubes are glued around the entire perimeter. Weaving starts from the walls. But first you need to decide on the size of the future basket and prepare two identical pieces of cardboard. In this case, their form isrectangle.
Work sequence
- The edges of the cardboard should be marked with a pencil and a ruler: mark the places for gluing the tubes.
- Use PVA glue to glue the tubes to a piece of cardboard and let them dry.
- The second piece is smeared with glue and glued to the first: in this way, the tubes will be securely fixed.
- When the blank dries, a basket of newspapers is woven.
- The ends of the uprights should be fixed for ease of operation.
- The first two tubes for work are glued to the base - they begin the process.
- When short ends remain, they should be lengthened by gluing new blanks.
- The edge is formed as usual: the extra ponytails are cut off and glued inside.
Primer and paint
After the product is ready, it should be primed with paint or PVA glue. The latter is slightly diluted with water and applied with a brush. It is necessary to allow the basket to dry and start staining from the inside. After applying several layers, the basket is left to dry completely. Only when it is dry, the outer side of the basket is painted. Also apply several layers of paint and let the product dry. Many needlewomen end up covering it with water-based varnish as well. The finished newspaper basket looks like this (photo).
Used in paintingstain will give the product a dark color, and the basket will be like a vine. Looking at the creations of masters who have been weaving for a long time, you can see that not everyone uses paint. Some leave a variegated newspaper color. And other craftsmen color the tubes in advance: this gives the basket a better look. With this method, unpainted areas are not visible, and the product looks much neater.
Decoration of finished products
Having learned how to make a basket from a newspaper, many needlewomen go further. They master new types of weaves, braids, use additional materials. Products are beautifully obtained in which gaps are made during vertical weaving: the basket seems light. So, having made the main part of the weaving, leave 2-3 cm free. Further, having glued a new newspaper stick, they continue to work and draw up the edge of the basket. Where a gap is made, a beautiful satin ribbon is skipped and a bow is tied. If the basket is intended for use on the table, for food products such as bread, then a beautiful lining is sewn for it inside. Its edges are turned over the side and sewn on. The seam around the perimeter is sealed with lace or braid. Such a basket for bread decorates the table and can be a gift for any housewife. Even a simple basket, but with decorated handles, looks very interesting.
Of course, the experience and imagination of the author help to create exclusive things. Needlewomen and needlewomen make wicker vases, caskets, large boxes for linen. Especially talentedthey also swung at coffee tables: many products can be made from ordinary newspapers and magazines. It is enough to start with an ordinary basket, and weaving can become an interesting hobby for every person. Many make a real business out of their hobby, which brings a good income. Therefore, before throwing away the accumulated waste paper, you need to think: why not put it into an interesting business?
