It has long been noticed that any room, even with a very modest finish of walls, floors, ceilings and cheap furniture, can be made cozy and admirable by hanging tulle with lambrequins. Every woman who has sewing skills and successful patterns can make such a design with her own hands.
A little about tulle
Under this name, a transparent mesh cotton, semi-silk or other fabric is known.
Tulle are:
- plain and color;
- smooth and patterned;
- made from natural or artificial fibers.
Smooth tulle is produced on special machines from two thread systems. It is used to make elegant lingerie and evening wear, as well as the basis for piece embroidered products.
Patterned tulle (curtain) is produced on lace machines. It is widely used for sewing home textiles such as curtains, capes and bedspreads.
Tulle for window decoration
It is known thatcurtains to protect rooms from the penetration of sunlight, mosquitoes, midges and other winged insects have been used since the time of the Egyptian pharaohs. Later they learned to drape beautifully, and in the Renaissance they began to use velvet and tulle with lambrequins. They paired beautifully with lush tassels, tiebacks and beautiful cornices, creating a luxurious look for window and door openings.
What are lambrequins
This detail of interior knitwear is a horizontal decorative drapery located at the top of a complex curtain, window opening or door. It occupies the entire width of the cornice and, as a rule, is made of dense fabric with pleats, planted on a bandeau lining, or without it (“soft” version). Quite often, combined options are used, sewn from several types of fabric.
Pelmet can be decorated with additional decorative elements in the form of flounces, tassels and cutouts in the form of teeth or semicircles. It can be symmetrical or have an abstract design with any outline.
Tulle with lambrequins in the hall: is it possible to sew with your own hands
Since the living room is the main room in the house, its design is approached especially responsibly. This fully applies to decorating window openings.
If this is the first experience in sewing stylish curtains with lambrequin, then it is not recommended to overestimate your strength and choose options with complex drapery.
General instructions
Tulle with lambrequins (see photo for the hall below) can be of any color. It is chosen depending on the range used to decorate this room as a whole.
Work will be organized in the following sequence:
- Fix a bar above the window opening, which will serve as the basis for the curtains. The installation site of this part is located 10 cm above the frame, and the length is made such that it exceeds the width of the window opening by a maximum of 15 centimeters.
- If they are going to sew a variant on the lining fabric, then it is cut out using a pattern. Then, on a sewing machine, the base material is sewn to it. The lining is sewn so that the upper edge of the decorative curtains is not touched, as the stitched material will have to be turned inside out.
- Finished window opening design elements are mounted on an already installed base in the very center. For this, a furniture stapler is a good helper. The free ends of the lambrequin are straightened along the entire length of the cornice and fixed in the right places.
- If everything is done carefully, then tulle with lambrequins (the photo for the hall is presented below) will be a wonderful decoration for your apartment.
How to calculate fabric consumption per curtain
If you need a tulle with lambrequins for the kitchen, the photo of which you saw in some magazine, where it is not indicated how many meters of textile you will need, you can use our instructions.
First, let's find out the consumption of tulle and a denser decorating fabric, if it is assumed thatthe complex curtain will consist of three vertical parts and a lambrequin.
In order to make a calculation, you should decide on the type of braid and the width of the cornice. Their ratio can be 2:1, 1, 5:1 or 3:1. Let's assume that tulle with pelmets is used for the kitchen, where the cornice has a width of 130 cm. Then it is better to choose a ratio of 2:1. In other words, you need to purchase a tulle with a width of 260 + 10 cm. The “additive” is needed here in order to align the edges and to hem the sides.
As for the consumption of a denser fabric hanging down the sides, there are two options:
- When untied, it can cover the entire tulle. Then the consumption should be the same as for transparent fabric + 10 cm.
- Dense fabric can hang over the top of the tulle, leaving it open in the middle. Her fabric consumption will be reduced by 1/3.
- As for how much textile will be used to make a lambrequin, it depends on the pattern.
Complex curtain height
The width of tulle and curtain textiles is standard (2.8-3 m). Thus, the height of the curtain does not affect the consumption of fabric, but we will also consider it. Most often, those who choose tulle with lambrequins for decorating an apartment prefer that, after hanging on the cornice, it reaches the floor. In this case, it is necessary to take into account the width of the braid, which can be equal to 2.5-10 cm, since any of its loop rows can be used to attach to the cornice. In addition, you need to take into account that to hem the curtains from the bottom, you will need to leave about 5 cm.
How to adjust the machine to sew curtains
Tulle with lambrequins will look presentable only if the work is done neatly and efficiently. To do this, first of all, you need to adjust the sewing machine by setting the appropriate tension of the lower and upper threads. You can pick it up by trial and error, using a piece of tulle folded in half.
In addition, the quality of the stitching is greatly influenced by the thread, which must be thin, strong and elastic. As for the color, it is better to choose it to match the fabric or one shade darker.
Be sure to change the sewing machine needle to a new, thin one, as its dull end will pull out the threads or leave puncture marks.
The stitching will not tighten the tulle if the stitch length is at least 3-5mm. It is also recommended to set the height of the teeth so that they advance the fabric without gathering it at the needle.
To prevent this, some craftswomen pull the edge of the curtain when sewing on a typewriter. Doing so can cause the needle to break, tearing or scratching the fabric, or the edge of the tulle will stretch and create ugly "waves" on the sides that can be difficult to remove.
Now you know how to sew a tulle with lambrequins in the bedroom, the photo of which you can proudly show to your friends.
