What kind of animal is patchwork?
Many needlewomen who love to sew always have pieces of fabric left over. Do not rush to throw them away, they can be useful. For example, these patches are useful to make a patchwork bedspread. It is easy to sew this product with your own hands. For work, you will need shreds of various sizes and different fabrics (silk, cotton, satin). These segments are sewn into a single canvas with a specific pattern. The thing turns out bright and unique.
If you like this technique, then try to start with a simple little thing. For example, make a bedspread for a bed. Patchwork is easy to master. You don't have to be a professional seamstress, you just need to knowsewing machine and needle and thread skills.
Patchwork: varieties
The following types of patchwork technique are distinguished:
- Traditional. This is the creation of a single canvas from individual shreds. The front side of such a product is made using the patchwork technique, and the lining is made of a single piece of matter. Kitchen potholders and pillowcases are usually sewn in this style.
- Crazy patchwork. For sewing, free-form figures, non-standard applications or curved stripes are used. The seams are masked with braid, lace, ribbons, beads or buttons. Handbags, clothes, decorative panels are made using this technique.
- Knitted. Patchwork in this style is not stitched, but crocheted. Most often, patchwork bedspreads are made using the patchwork technique for beds, bags, clothes.
- Japanese. Silk fabrics are used in this patchwork technique. Segments are cut out in the form of geometric shapes: squares, triangular rhombuses and corners. Clothes, decorative panels and bedspreads are made in this style.
- Quilting. A soft padding made of synthetic winterizer or batting is laid between the two canvases and everything is connected by machine stitching. Pillows, kitchen potholders, clothes for children are made using this technique.
Sewing technique
It seems to many that the technology of patchwork is very simple: cut and sew. But this is only at first glance simple. In fact, the patchwork technique requires skill, artistic taste, perseverance, diligence, accuracy and, most importantly, the ability to sew. There are the following ways of stitching pieces of fabric:
- Quick Squares. This technique is named so for a reason, as squares are cut out of previously sewn strips of fabric. Four types of matter are taken. First, two stripes of the same color are sewn together, and then two more of the other. The strips are applied face to face and stitched together. It turns out in this way the "sleeve". Next, an angle of 45 degrees is measured. That is, a ruler is taken and applied first to the upper edge of the “sleeve”, and then to the bottom. This action is done along the entire length. Thus we get squares.
- "Watercolor". At least seven types of fabric are taken as a basis, square shreds are combined from a light shade to a dark one. This creates the effect of watercolor painting.
- "Strip to strip". The product is assembled from multi-colored strips of matter. The segments are laid in rhombuses, zigzag, ladder or corners.
- "Log hut". This technique is based on stripes. They are sewn in a spiral around the square, which is placed in the center of the canvas.
- Magic Triangles. This item is easy to use. Triangles are used to make simple squares or complex patterns, such as "Diamond", "Mill", "Star".
- "Chess". The squares are stacked in a checkerboard pattern.
- "Russian square". The assembly of the pattern is difficult. The canvas is based on a square. Isosceles triangles are formed in the upper and lower tiers. The remaining rows are assembled from triangles andbands.
- "Honeycombs". A pattern of hexagons is assembled. A flower is made from them, and a button is sewn in the middle and covered with fabric.

Take a sharp knife. Start cutting the inner and then the outer contour first. You have a template in the form of a frame. Place the workpiece on the wrong side of the fabric and circle all the contours with chalk. For example, forstandard size bedspread (150 by 200 centimeters), you need to cut 180 square pieces measuring 15 by 15 centimeters (including seam allowances).
