Recently it has become fashionable to drape windows with Austrian curtains. With their semicircular folds, they resemble French ones. But at the same time they can rise and fall. Their main difference is the assembly in the lower third.
Luxury Austrian curtains, decorated with fringes or frills, look great on large windows. More modest, covering only a third of the opening, suitable for small windows.
Sewing Austrian curtains with your own hands is not easy, but even an inexperienced dressmaker should not have much difficulty. All you need is the main fabric, lining, slip-on cord, ring tape, drawstring tape, weights, and a piece of wood the same length as the cornice.
Austrian curtains look the most luxurious, made from wrinkle-resistant, light, flowing fabrics with a glossy sheen - satin, silk, artificial or mixed. Translucent gauze fabrics are also suitable: organza, guipure, tulle.
How to sew Austrian curtains? In thisthe article tells about the main stages and techniques that are used in their tailoring.
In order to sew Austrian curtains, you need to measure the length of the cornice and the height from the floor.
Fabric will need 1.5-2.5 times more. Remember to allow for seam and hem allowances.
Calculate the length of the nylon cord by the number of gathers on the curtain.
Let's say you have four assemblies, so you need four curtain heights plus the length of the curtain rod.
Next, proceed according to the points listed below.
- Open two rectangular panels. One is in the main fabric, one is in the lining.
- Fold the panels right sides and sweep from all sides. Side seams and bottom need to be sewn on a typewriter. Optionally, sew a fringe or frill to the bottom.
- Turn right side out, overcast the edges and iron. At this stage, you can sew the edges with a decorative stitch.
- According to the number of folds at equal distances - 50-80 centimeters, vertically baste the tape with rings. Iron and sew.
- The top should be folded over two centimeters and stitched.
- Sew a tightening tape to the top of the curtains and pull them along the length of the eaves. Austrian curtains with laid folds look very nice. In this case, you must first lay the folds, and then sew on the ribbon.
- Pass the cords through the rings on the vertical ribbons. The cord must be tied to the lower ring, you can immediately attach the weighting agent.
- Attaching the curtain to the wooden plank. Two rings should be nailed in the middle of the bar: one in the middle and one on the edge. We pass cords into these rings. First through the central, then through the side. And tie a knot. The cords should be of such length that, by pulling on them, you can easily adjust the height of the curtain.
- Hang the curtain on the cornice by the loops on the tightening tape.
- Pull the cord to raise it to the desired height. The free end of the cord can be decorated with a beautiful tassel and attached to a decorative hook on the wall.
Weights attached to the bottom of the curtains will make them fall faster and allow them to hang more evenly on the window.
