Designing a picture, photograph or embroidery in a baguette will require the use of a passport. Of course, you can do without it, but a well-chosen color of the passe-partout, its impeccable execution will make our image sound new, more complete and interesting. In addition, the passe-partout is able to harmoniously combine the decorated image with interior details.

You can buy a passe-partout ready-made, but it's not at all difficult to make a passe-partout with your own hands. First you need to decide on the color, then buy cardboard in the framing workshop. To make a passport, you will need to cut a neat window in a sheet of this cardboard. The surface on which we will work must be sufficiently strong and elastic, and, of course, perfectly flat. In addition, it should be noted that in the process of cutting there is a threat of damage to it with a knife.

When making a passe-partout with your own hands, you can use an ordinary well-sharpened knife, but if possible, it is better to purchase a special cutter. With it, you can make an oblique cut (at 45 degrees) on the insideframes, which will give the image perspective and a sense of depth, and the work will look professional and sophisticated.

It should not be forgotten that the passe-partout for embroidery, photographs or paintings should overlap the image by at least 5 mm around the entire perimeter. When cutting, you should be very careful, the cleanliness and accuracy of the cut must be observed.

As for the tools used to make the passe-partout, it should be noted that working with the simplest and cheapest cutter is a rather complicated matter, without certain skills it is unlikely that you will be able to do the job accurately. Much better results can be obtained when using a cutter that has a special slot for a knife blade. One of the most convenient and affordable devices for making do-it-yourself passe-partout is the Logan 4000 cutter, which has a fixed angle of inclination of replaceable blades.

The device is equipped with control marks for user convenience, which determine the beginning and end of the cut. To fix the required field sizes, a movable graduated rod is used.

Making a passe-partout with your own hands will also require knowledge of some subtleties and rules. This applies to the width of the passe-partout frame: a picture or photo, which has a large number of details, may have a wide frame, or even a very wide one. Then all attention will be concentrated on the central part of the image, the importance of the generalwork ideas. A narrow frame in this case will provoke the consideration of every little thing and detail of the image, scatter attention. A wide frame will require a portrait in which there is a minimum of detail - this way we can expand the field of the frame. Photos or paintings with large spaces - sea, sky, etc. can be framed with a very thin frame.

The attractiveness of a work also often depends on the color and brightness of the mat. Too bright color can "clog" the image itself in the picture or painting. For low-contrast and dim images, a mat should be made in softer and lighter shades. The width of the frame and its shade can also work to give the image volume, "move" it inward or, conversely, move it forward. But it is very difficult to predict the result, it will be possible to evaluate it only when the picture is framed.
