Douglas Preston is a well-known science fiction writer who specializes in the genres of techno-thriller and mystical horror. He is best known for works written in collaboration with Lincoln Child. In addition, Douglas Preston is also a successful journalist.
Who is this?
Douglas Preston was born on May 20, 1956 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, United States of America. Douglas moved to Claremont, where he attended the local college, majoring in English Literature, graduating with honors.
After completing his studies, Douglas Preston worked at the American Museum of Natural History, located in New York. There he spent most of his time as editor, and then was promoted to publications manager. In parallel, he taught English literature at Princeton University.
However, the beginning of a writing career is connected precisely with the museum. It was there that he was inspired to write his first book, after which other works followed.
Preston Douglas' peak of success came in the 1990s when he teamed up with the aforementioned Lincoln Child to write thrilling, action-packed fantasy novels. To date, the writercontinues to release new books and writes for some of the world's leading magazines
Pendergast
Preston Douglas wrote many books in his life, but the Alois Pendergast series co-authored with Lincoln Child brought him the greatest popularity. The most outstanding and famous was the first book in the series, called "Relic".
The plot begins with the arrival of a new exhibit from South America at the American Museum of Natural History (where Preston worked). And right after that, a series of mysterious deaths begins in the museum. Moreover, these are murders that are so bloody and ruthless that it immediately becomes clear that the killer cannot be a person. And it's up to Investigator Pendergast to find out who's behind it all.
It was this novel that became the most famous by such an author as Douglas Preston. The books that followed have also received great acclaim, especially the second and third parts of the series, The Reliquary and The Cabinet of Curiosities, which continue the theme started in the first part.
Gideon Crewe
Another episode that Preston co-wrote with Child is Gideon Crewe. It's not a big series. It so far includes four works, the last of which was written in 2016. But where did it all begin?
The first book in the series was "Gideon's Sword", which tells how the talented hacker Gideon, who stole the greatest works of art, hacked into the most impenetrable computer protections and subtly took revenge on the murderers of his parents, he becomes an agent of the US special services, who entrust him with the task of delivering important information to a Japanese physicist who dies right before the meeting.
And the plot of the book revolves around how Kru is investigating this case.
What other works did Douglas Preston write? The author's books are mostly written in collaboration with Child, so it's worth taking a look at those works that Douglas created on his own.
Wyman Ford
This series, started in 2005, is the work of Preston himself, without the support of Childe. The first book, called Tyrannosaurus Canyon, tells how a famous antiquities hunter dies, leaving a secret cipher for a bystander. He begins trying to solve the cipher, but so far does not even suspect that he is becoming a target just because he became the owner of these cherished numbers.
What does this cipher hide? The protagonist hopes to find the answer to this question from a monk who lives far from civilization. It turns out that this monk is an experienced retired CIA cryptographer. Can he help the main character?
Naturally, these are just a few examples of the author's most famous books. In total, several dozen books came out from under his pen, but the Pendergast series is still the most popular. It already has twenty parts, and the twenty-first is on the way. It is reported that it may be on sale as early as late 2016 or early 2017
