Who are the samurai?
First, tell your child who the samurai are. The information below will be useful to parents of both boys and girls. Get your child interested in Japanese culture, and who knows, maybe in the future your family will have a real Japanese scholar and expert in the Japanese language.
The word "samurai" from ancient Japanese means "one who serves a person of the highest rank." These are warriors who acted as the bodyguard of their master. In everyday life, they also played the role of a servant.
Education of morale and willpower among samurai
The training of future samurai began at the age of eight and ended at 16. The boys who were to become samurai in the future were brought up very harshly. Education was based on the following principles:
- respect for parents;
- devotionemperor;
- respect for the teacher;
- Buddhist neglect of death.
The latter had a huge role in the life of the future warrior. The Japanese say: "A parent is the one who gave life, and a teacher is the one who raised a person." Boys were raised to be fearless. The father could send the child to the cemetery at night. Children were taken to public executions, forced to look at severed heads.
To develop perseverance in a warrior, the guy was forced to do hard physical work, often stay awake at night, walk barefoot in the snow, wake up neither light nor dawn. Future samurai could not be fed for days, considering the hunger strike very useful.
Children were raised reserved and emotionally cold. If a child was hurt and cried, the mother could only look reproachfully at him. At 15–16 years old, guys were considered full-fledged warriors and they were given real weapons: katana and wakizashi. The guy was given a real samurai costume: hakama wide trousers and kimono.
Kimono features
Translated from Japanese "kimono" - any kind of clothing. Even a beginner can carve out this wardrobe item. Kimono in the Land of the Rising Sun is worn by everyone: men, women, children. According to tradition, 9 meters of matter 30 cm wide went into this thing.
Kimono is loose clothing that does not have strict sizes. On the back, the dressing gown, as a rule, is cut 60 cm wide. The shelves have an allowance for smell. In a modern stylized version, it is required. Historically, the costume has changed, and there may or may not be a smell.
Kimonos can be worn in many ways. Croiliit tends to be slightly longer than the host's height required. Kimono can always be made visually shorter by pleating under the belt.
The collar in the original kimono is a very voluminous detail. It is cut out from a rectangle and reaches either the waist or the hem. Looking at an old layered kimono, you may notice something resembling a figured skirt cutout in the upper layers of the suit. This is the edge of the collar, which was huge in the classic old kimono.
Kimono cutting
In the photo below you can see how to cut a kimono to save fabric. The width of the fabric for the bathrobe should be 110 cm. Cut the material along all solid lines. The pattern is given with all seam allowances, except for the bottom of the product. Add yourself a few centimeters to the hem of the kimono. First sew the back along the bottom seam, and then cut out the neckline.
The pattern shown here is classic as the back and fronts are two separate pieces. If desired, you can make them one-piece.
Kimono tailoring
Overlock the edges of the fabric. First of all, you need to connect the two elements of the back. Now you can cut the neck. When marking, do not forget about the seam allowance.
Stitch front and back over the shoulders. Don't forget to sew the extensions to the right and left shelves.
Fold the sleeves in half. Focus on the dotted line. Sew fabric from shoulder to wrist. You will have two pipes. Stitch in the sleeves. To do this, you need to connect the middle with the shoulderseam. Sew the sides.
Put the kimono on the model. Straighten the product on the shoulders and back. Wrap up a stylized robe. Now on the shelves you need to bend the triangles for the collar. It will start from the back of the neck to the bottom (set the level as you wish). Remove the costume from the model and secure the sewing elements with pins. Stitch the three parts of the gate in one strip. Fold it lengthwise and sew. Next, it needs to be turned out and ironed. You will receive a ribbon that is 5 cm wide.
Sew on the collar, cut off the excess. Now you need to trim the entire product along the bottom. Using this pattern, you can sew both a samurai costume for a boy and a beautiful kimono for a girl or woman. Moms can make a delicate, feminine dressing gown using this pattern. Kimono can be used as a New Year's samurai costume for a children's party in kindergarten or a carnival at school.
Hakama
Now we need to complete the samurai costume with hakama pants. These are very wide, almost dimensionless, pleated trousers with cuts from the waist to the hip and ties. They are worn by both men and women. Women's hakama tie high under the bust, men's hakama at waist level.
Cutting Japanese pants
For an adult, take a fabric 110 cm wide. Below is a hakama pattern. We cut the fabric along the indicated lines. Add a few inches to the bottom for the hem.
Sewing the hakama
If the material is “fluffy”, then it should be overlocked. It is necessary to sew in pairs the elements of the front and rearhalf hakama. You should have four parts.
Take the front elements and sew them together along the middle seam, stepping back from the top edge of 30 cm. We process the outer top edge: on the wrong side you need to bend a triangle measuring 10 cm on one side and 20 cm on the other. Cut off excess material. Remember to leave a seam allowance.
Let's move on to laying the folds. Ahead of them should be 6 pieces (you can make three). They should be turned towards the center. Smooth down the folds hard, there can be no soft drapery here. Now sew the sides from the slits to the bottom edge and hem the trousers.
You can sew a samurai costume from cotton fabric, dense curtain material.
Kimono can be decorated with embroidery. A samurai costume for the New Year can be made from rayon.
