Every parent on the eve of the New Year wonders where to get a carnival costume for a child. Girls and boys at festive concerts in kindergartens often play the role of bunnies, squirrels. Isn't that cute? But what if you don’t buy or rent a standard banal outfit, but sew a squirrel costume with your own hands? You can also try and create an original model with your own hands, putting all your parental love into it.

Required material

Everything needs to be done quickly if there is very little time left before the holiday. So, in order to sew the “Squirrel” carnival costume, we need:

- a meter of steel wire;

- 1.5 meters of aluminum wire;

- red or brown faux fur (with a width of 1.5 meters, we need no more than 20 cm);- the cheapest belt of medium thickness in any color.

Tail frame

If you have an extra belt for adults, it must be shortened to fit the child's waist. Next, cut it in the middle, bend it on both sides by about 3 cm and sew. Put the frame of the future tail into the formed two loops. It must be made from steel wire, which is bent into a squirrel tail.

The next step is to try to strengthen the resulting structure. To do this, wrap the frame with thinner aluminum wire. This procedure will add some volume to the future tail.

Sew tail

It's time to move on to the most important step. We sew a tail from the fur that we bought in advance. You should get a frame 45 cm high. The fur needs to be folded in half and sewn in such a way that the length of the fur cover is a little more than 45 cm.

Starting to sew a squirrel costume with your own hands, the main thing is not to worry that the seams will be sloppy and will be visible. The pile of faux fur will hide all the minor flaws in the seam on the tail. From the outside, it will even seem that the canvas is just one piece.

Everything needs to be sewn by hand, folding the details with fur inside. When all the seams are done, just turn the fur inside out, you get a beautiful squirrel tail. It remains only to put it on the previously constructed frame.

If you haven't sewed anything before, you may run into a problem. From the gravity of the structure, the tail will not hold and will constantly fall. But there is a way out. On the back side, you can sew two thinfur harnesses. They will be worn on the back like a knapsack and thus keep the tail upright, like a real squirrel.

Improvised hair ears

If the girl's hair is quite long, you can improvise: do not cling the ears on the headband or tassels on the elastic band, but use the more interesting option. Divide your hair into two sections and tie into high ponytails. We form small bumps from them and fix them with red rubber bands to match the color of the suit. You can also attach a small piece of fur to improvised ears, and the squirrel costume, sewn with your own hands, is completely ready.

Squirrel Ears

If your child has a haircut or hair is very short, then ponytails will not work. It is worth thinking about artificial ears. They can be cut out of pieces of red felt according to the pattern and framed with fur around the edges, or fur tassels can be made. Attach the ears to the hoop with liquid nails. You can even sew them onrubber band, but it will not be as effective.

Sew the ears in the second way

And here is another interesting way to make beautiful squirrel ears. It is suitable for small children. In addition to the headband, it is possible to use elastic bands to which the ears will be attached. To make them stand upright and be voluminous, you need to use foam rubber for filling.

Making a pattern

So, for work you need small shreds of white, red satin, foam rubber, black thread for brushes and elastic bands or a rim. Patterns must be made in the form of a leaflet, the size is chosen at your discretion. According to the pattern, cut out 4 parts from satin (2 white and 2 red) and 2 parts from foam rubber. Keep in mind that satin pieces will be seamed, so leave a small seam allowance.

Tassels

In order to make tassels on the ears, you need to take a small piece of cardboard and make about 15 turns of thread on it. The last turn secures the bundle of threads on one side. With another scissors, you need to cut the threads and release from the cardboard. You can say the bundle is ready. It should be tied with black thread from the bottom for security.

Now let's get back to the question of how to make a squirrel costume, namely ears. The white and orange details of future ears must be folded with the front side and fastened with pins. Insert the brush inside so that only its tail sticks out at the top of the ear.
